DENBY Dale Ladies' Choir is celebrating an impressive double.

The choir, under the guidance of new musical director Margaret Taylor, were crowned Best Female Voice Choir and won the Open Choral Challenge at the Penistone Competitive Music Festival.

The group performed jazz, classical, Irish folk and modern pieces. Singer and choir committee member Julia Hayes, of Lower Cumberwort, praised the new musical director.

She said: "We are especially pleased to have won because it was a last minute decision to enter and we have not been working with Margaret for long.

"Everyone was delighted with the result and we are very excited about the future, I am sure we will have more success.

"There was a high standard of competition and quite a big crowd as well which was lovely."
