CALDERDALE Council wants people to start thinking about those cold winter nights ahead.

Officials want people to contact them now so they can insulate their homes and get prepared for the cold weather.

Acting home energy team leader Robina Fogg said: "Most people contact us in winter for insulation for their homes so may have to wait longer, due to the demand.

"During the summer the insulation industry has enough slack to arrange the installation of cavity wall and loft insulation in a few weeks."

Calderdale runs schemes for all owner/occupiers and private tenants, no matter what their income.

All householders over 60 qualify for free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

People over 60 who receive benefits may be eligible for free central heating.

People under 60 who are on housing or council tax benefit may also get free insulation measures.

Free insulation is also available for people with cold-related illnesses and, where appropriate, heat- recovery ventilation systems may be installed.

All private householders in Calderdale can take advantage of tendered prices for insulation and heating work carried out by approved installers.

Ms Fogg said: "By insulating your property you will benefit from a warmer and more comfortable home.

"Insulation will pay for itself in about two to three years and will keep saving you money for years to come."

Interest-free loans are available for the installation of central heating, insulation and solar energy.
