LANTERNS lit the way for a procession of families through Birkby.

The Birkby Pride walk was the culmination of a four-month project between Birkby Infant and Nursery School, Birkby Junior School and Kirklees Council.

Almost 200 children and adults took part in the event carrying home-made lanterns which had been created at school workshops.

Artist Tom Wood and Kirklees Council’s school improvement officer for the arts Andrew Heath-Beesley have been working with both schools to breathe new life into the community.

At the beginning of the project, parents said they found the walk between both schools difficult because of rubbish and fly tipping en-route.

The project is being led by headteachers Diana Wilson and Susan Davis and is aimed to create a better environment.

As part of the council’s Bin It in Birkby campaign, household rubbish was removed and fly tipping areas cleaned up.

The lantern procession was followed by a healthy-eating buffet at Birkby Infant and Nursery School.
