Parents are being urged to register their child for a school place by Thursday.

Kirklees council says time is running out for families to register their child for full-time school.

Children born between September 1, 2010 and August 31 2011 must be registered for a full-time school place to start in reception in September 2015.

A spokeswoman for the authority said: “Kirklees is an excellent place for children and young people to secure an education, both inside and beyond the classroom.

“When registering your child, you can select three preferences for which school you would most like them to attend.

“The deadline is 11.59pm on Thursday January 15. A late application can severely reduce your chances of obtaining a place at your preferred school.”

Meltham Moor has been rated as the top primary school in Huddersfield in latest figures ranking primary schools across 33 different categories.

The Local Government Association is warning schools could be pushed to breaking over the next decade by the need to provide a million more places for pupils.

They warn the continuing squeeze on places could lead to a “tipping point” where there is no money or space left to expand schools any further.

Official figures predict that there may be around 900,000 extra pupils in England’s schools over the next decade.

The Association said its own analysis had estimated it will cost £12bn to create enough school places for all of these children.

David Simmonds, chair of the LGA’s children and young people board, said: “We do not want any child to be without a place.”
