FIRE investigators are probing a blaze which ravaged a Primrose Hill pub.

The Woodman pub, on Whitehead Lane, became engulfed in flames at around 9.45am yesterday.

Residents watched as smoke billowed from the empty pub and flames appeared out of the damaged roof.

The fire had started in the roof space and had destroyed part of the roof, leaving only blackened struts.

Residents said the pub had been closed for around two years and it is currently for sale with York estate agents Barry and Crux.

A total of four fire engines were on the scene, from Huddersfield, Brighouse, Elland and Slaithwaite.

An aerial appliance was also on hand. Two large water jets were used outside the building, while five firefighters with breathing apparatus tackled the flames from inside using two hose reels.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was also used to clear the building of smoke.

Nobody was in the pub and nobody was injured. People living in neighbouring properties did not have to be evacuated.

One resident said the pub’s owners had difficulty selling and it had become a target for vandals, who had smashed windows and started rubbish fires in recent weeks. I personally won’t be sorry if it doesn’t re-open. It has been a lot quieter round here since it closed.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
