POLICE are investigating after a prisoner plunged from a third- floor ward window at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The 26-year-old man, who is believed to have been arrested for alleged burglary, was being treated on Ward Seven at the hospital on Monday evening at 6.40pm.

The Examiner understands the man had handcuffs removed to undergo treatment.

The prisoner fell on to the concrete some 30ft below and sustained back injuries.

The man is in a stable condition.

Police refused to comment on the cause of the incident.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: "Police were escorting a man who was under arrest at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on Monday evening.

"Whilst the man was receiving treatment he fell from a window and sustained a back injury."
