ONE prize is not enough for some of Huddersfield's young musicians who picked up handfuls of awards yesterday.

A professional pianist who accompanied Lydia Wyatt on the flute said the 10-year-old from Rastrick played better than some music diploma students he had heard.

Chairman Michael Hampshire added: “She is quite a remarkable musician and although quite shy off the stage she is a very confident performer when on stage. The flute playing this afternoon was exquisite and she shows lots of promise – truly accomplished.”

Gregory Barker, from Fixby, has been taking part in the music festival since he was only six-years-old.

The Fixby schoolboy plays saxophone, clarinet and recorder and came first, second and third in his three classes.

Parents Gale and Andrew were delighted with their son's performances and said it was great to bump into old friends they had met over previous years.

Gregory, 14, said: “It's nice to come here and experience the performing side of music and gain some experience.

“I play three instruments which I focus on at school and I try and I play a little bit of piano.”

Clayton West schoolgirl Mollie Davidson was told her piano playing was 'outstanding' and the eight-year-old picked up a first place in her age group.

The Kayes First School pupil also entered the age group above and was rewarded a second place for her violin playing and second place for her singing.

The festival runs until tomorrow night.
