THE inquest into the death of a prominent Huddersfield sikh has been opened.

Former Fartown Sikh Temple treasurer, Tarsam Singh Rana, 75, died following an incident at his home on May 6.

Det Insp Martin Hepworth from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team told the Bradford inquest yesterday that police had been called at 8.34pm on Friday, May 6 to reports of an assault in Alder Street, Fartown.

He said officers found Mr Singh Rana unconscious.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but was pronounced dead at 9.20pm.

Mr Singh Rana’s son Jasknwal Rana, 32 has been charged with his manslaughter.

No plea has been entered and he has been released on bail to his sister’s address in Birmingham.

He is due to stand trial later this year.

Det Insp Hepworth said two post-mortems had been completed and Mr Singh Rana’s body could now be released for his funeral.

Deputy Coroner Prof Paul Marks agreed the release and adjourned the inquest until the conclusion of crown court proceedings.
