A PUBLIC inquiry will be held into a shake-up of this area's political map.

It comes after 63 objections were made to proposals involving Parliamentary constituencies in Kirklees, Wakefield and Leeds.

One major change put forward is to switch Denby Dale and Kirkburton from Wakefield to a constituency wholly within Kirklees.

They would be transferred to Dewsbury, the constituency where they were before the last review in 1995.

The Boundary Commission said the inquiry would begin in Wakefield on April 18.

But a spokesman said: "There has been widespread speculation in the media that a General Election may be held on May 5.

"If a General Election is called for that date, the inquiry will be postponed until June 27."

Officials revealed that 88 representations had been received over proposals for Kirklees, Wakefield and Leeds.

Thirteen supported all or part of the proposals, 12 supported part of the proposals while also objecting to other parts and 63 objected to all or part of the proposals.

The objections included three petitions from two sources, containing 2,371 names.

Any changes are not expected to be brought into force until 2010 or 2011.
