AN investigation into a toddler’s brutal murder in Huddersfield is expected to finish in the next two months.

Kirklees Council launched a serious case review following the death of two-year-old Sanam Navsarka from Deighton.

The little girl had 107 injuries, including broken arms and legs, when she died on May 8, 2008.

Last month her stepfather Subhan Anwar was sentenced to 23 years for her murder while her mother Zahbeena Navsarka was given nine years for manslaughter.

Kirklees is investigating how it dealt with the case.

The council’s Cabinet member for children Clr Ken Smith said: "The serious case review had to be suspended until the end of the court case, but I expect it to be completed in one or two months.

"It’s a multi-agency consideration of all circumstances surrounding the family.

"The serious case review looks at the actions that different agencies took and whether they followed procedures."

A second serious case review is being conducted by Kirklees Council into the kidnapping of Dewsbury schoolgirl Shannon Matthews.

A date for that report has not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, Clr Smith welcomed the appointment of Tony Elson to an improvement board to oversee children’s services at Doncaster Council.

The former Kirklees Council chief executive will try to boost performance at Doncaster, which was judged as "inadequate" by an official report.

The Government ordered a takeover of Doncaster children’s services after the deaths of seven children through abuse or neglect over five years.

Clr Smith was on the interview panel which gave Mr Elson the job of director of social services at Kirklees in 1988.

He said: "I think it’s a very good appointment.

"Tony is very sharp, he’s got an eye for detail and he’s very good at thinking strategically. He’s got all the right attributes.

" I can't speak highly enough of him and I’m pleased to see he got the job."
