YOUNGSTERS and residents of Mirfield could soon be taking part in a whole host of new sports.

The Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form, Kitson Hill Road, has announced that its £1m MFG Sports Centre will officially open on January 8.

The high-tech sports centre is the latest addition to the academy’s campus and will be available for use by members of the public as well as students.

There has already been local interest in staging a variety of new activities there, including a boot camp, roller skating, martial arts, relaxation exercises, field sports and activities for the disabled.

The new development incorporates a large sports hall, a floodlit Olympic-sized synthetic pitch, a dance studio and state-of-the art gym.

The fitness studio is equipped with the latest cardiovascular and resistance machines from Cybex, a leader in sports science development.

In addition, the studio will have Olympic free weights, a vibrogym and a range of equipment designed to improve strength, tone and fitness at all levels.

The dance studio has a sprung floor, mirrored walls, ballet bar, and state-of-the-art sound system.

The school is keen to ensure that the facilities are available as a valuable resource for the local community.

Project manager Allison Simpson said: “The centre is an amazing resource for our students, our staff and our local community.

“The standard of equipment is second to none and we look forward to an outstanding sporting future.

“It will make a phenomenal difference, we have first class facilities professional sports clubs would be envious of.

“We also hope it will enhance our community links through a whole range of exciting activities new to Mirfield.”

School principal Lorraine Barker added: “A healthy body and a healthy mind contribute to success in life.”
