THE new Mayor of Kirklees is promising to reach out to as many residents and community organisations as possible during her year of office.

Clr Margaret Fearnley, a Liberal Democrat councillor in Colne Valley for eight years, succeeds Clr Mary Harkin.

She has already announced her two charities - Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton and the Huddersfield-based Laura Crane Trust.

Clr Fearnley, of Linthwaite, said: "I'm so proud to be chosen and so looking forward to my year."

Her husband, Barry, will be her consort. He was a councillor for 24 years.

Clr Fearnley steps up to the position after being Deputy Mayor.

Tory councillor Donald Firth, from Holme Valley South, is her successor as Deputy Mayor. His wife, Ann, is Deputy Mayoress.
