Dating back to the 16th Century, The Old Tannery at Almondbury is on the fringe of the village and originally belonged to Huddersfield’s historic Ramsden family who owned much of the town until the 1920s.

For the last 14 years it has been the much-loved home of Chris and Frances Shaw who are now looking to downsize and stay within the Almondbury/Kirkburton area.

The house, which sits at the top of Almondbury’s St Helen’s Gate, was originally four cottages, two at the front and two at the back.

Frances said: “Apparently the house has always been known as the tannery but we are uncertain of it’s history. We decided to change it’s name to The Old Tannery to keep the historic local connection.”

Once inside this house, there is much more to it than at first meets the eye. With stunning views across the Woodsome Valley and a substantial garden, the property is much larger than it looks from the road and offers a wealth of accommodation, ideal for a family.

“We understand that years ago the property came into the ownership of Huddersfield Corporation and became a council house. In 1990 it returned to private ownership after it was regarded as a non-standard council property,” said Frances.

The detached five bedroom home is Grade II listed and has a wealth of character and original features including beams, flagged floors and fireplaces.

Mr and Mrs Shaw have upgraded the house during their time at the property and have created a beautiful garden which has terraces and patios, lawns, mature shrubs and lovely views.

Approach this house through automatic gates and a driveway with a single garage. Once inside the gates, visitors are always surprised at how large this property and garden actually is.

Enter the house through a beamed hallway which leads through to a charming sitting room with flagged floor and antique brick fireplace. There is also a formal dining room with archway, a useful utility room, breakfast/dining kitchen with views towards Emley Moor mast, a downstairs w.c. and a snug with beamed ceiling, stone fireplace and period style cupboards.

The whole of the downstairs is charming, welcoming and you would imagine has a real cosy feel in the cooler months of the year.

Upstairs the house has five bedrooms, the smallest of which is currently set up as a study, and a house bathroom.

The master bedroom is a delightful room with views over the garden and has an en-suite and dressing room.

Underneath the house there are three cellars and outside a second larger than average double garage, a garden room and greenhouse.

Chris said: “This has been a lovely home for us, close to local shops but equally near open countryside and with fabulous views. We would like to stay in the local area as it is ideal for shops and other amenities.

“Although the house is on the edge of the village and close to King James School, it is always really quiet and peaceful. It sits in a sheltered spot and with the large garden, it’s a great party house.”

This house has much more than initially meets the eye.

It is ideal for a family and for anyone who enjoys tending a sizeable garden.
