A MARCH will take place tomorrow against controversial plans to axe a Mirfield school.

The event is being organised as a protest against the proposals by Kirklees Council to close Castle Hall School and to expand Mirfield Free Grammar School to take in 2,000 pupils.

It is part of a massive shake-up planned for north Kirklees schools.

A spokesman for protest group Reach said: “Parents, pupils, staff and governors at both schools feel that the proposals are deeply flawed and cannot be allowed to proceed.

“Kirklees Council has said it is keen to consult with stakeholders on these matters and is holding ‘consultation’ events across north Kirklees.

“Reach feels these are empty gestures since many parents have asked questions and have received platitudes in place of meaningful answers.

The march will set off tomorrow at 10am from Ravensthorpe Library and go along Huddersfield Road to Mirfield.

The spokesman said: “We are asking people to dress in school uniform or as pirates to represent KMC, who we want to portray as the villains who are attempting to steal our treasuredŠsecondary schools.”

Kirklees Council has a consultation event at Garden Street Community Centre in Ravensthorpe tomorrow, from 11am until 2pm.
