PEACE protesters took to the streets of Huddersfield as part of a nationwide protest over continued Israeli action in Lebanon.

The protest was by the Huddersfield Stop the War Coalition.

June Jones, a spokesman for the group, said: "We want people to sign our letter to Tony Blair, expressing our dismay that the British Government, almost alone in the world, is not calling for a ceasefire."

The group wants the United Nations to move in and establish an immediate ceasefire and bring help for Lebanon.

* Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has called on the British government to push the USA harder and quicker for Middle East peace.

He is seeking an immediate cessation of violence in the ongoing Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Mr Malik said: "The loss of innocent life in this conflict, Israeli, Lebanese and Palestinian, is abhorrent and deplorable.

"Civilians should not be forced to exist in the crossfire between two warring factions. It is their safety and security that is paramount.

"I'm urging the Prime Minister to push the USA to call for an immediate ceasefire."
