A CAMPAIGN to fight Kirklees Council plans to have local libraries run by volunteers is gathering pace.

A protest meeting is planned for Honley later this week.

It has been organised by the Honley Book Group – one of many organisations which use the village library.

The council plans to launch a major consultation programme soon to discuss the plans to get community groups in to run some libraries.

It is believed seven branch libraries, including Honley, could be farmed out to volunteers.

Suzanne Dufton, of the Book Group, has organised the meeting at 11am on Wednesday.

She said: “We believe public opinion is against such proposals.

“We are holding the meeting to meet local councillors and to meet Carol Stump, newly appointed as chief librarian in Kirklees Libraries.

“We want to generate more public awareness of what these proposals could mean and to gauge the views of local councillors before the official consultation starts.”

The meeting is at Trinity Church on Wednesday at 11am.
