EIGHT hundred protest leaflets are being distributed this weekend by Holme Valley villagers opposed to a mobile phone mast.

The campaign is being waged in Scholes, where T-Mobile wants to build a 60ft-high mast.

Opponents have already held one public meeting and are stepping up their efforts ahead of a planning application being considered by Kirklees Council.

Mike Reader, of Scholes Residents' Association, said: "The proposed mast will be in a high density residential area and there is a large number of houses very close to the proposed site.

"It is inevitable that the radio-frequency energy will be directed into the surrounding homes and this is causing great concern to local residents, particularly those with young families."

The Examiner revealed earlier this month how T-Mobile wants to put its mast on a site at St George's Road, Scholes, a short distance from the village primary school.

Flyers being distributed this weekend include a letter of objection which residents can sign and send to the council.

Mr Reader said: "There is a strong body of opinion against this application in the village."
