MUSIC-loving licensees from Huddersfield have won a pub `Oscar'.

Stephen Pyke and wife Claire, of the Bay Horse at Lindley, won a prize at the Publican Awards ceremony in London.

With their mix of themed party nights and live acts, the couple won the Music Pub Award for 2004.

Two or three bands play the Acre Street pub each month, in between diverse nights including those for fans of Merseybeat, the 1960s music of The Italian Job era or the soundtrack beloved by Brighton Beach scooter boys.

"I have got a very fertile imagination," said Steve. "And I never throw anything away!"

The Bay Horse can be transformed into Liverpool's legendary Cavern Club or a 1960s pub.

The couple have been at the Bay Horse for six years. They managed the premises for four years before taking on the lease.

"It's amazing," added Stephen. "Some of the pubs we were up against were massive venues."

Steve said the success of the evenings was a team effort.

"The staff are clued up and our customers know what we do. If they see somebody worth booking they let us know."

The competition is judged by the Publican magazine - which also runs the awards - and sponsored by the Performing Rights Society.

"To me it's like winning the Oscars," said Steve.

"Film Oscars are voted for by the movie industry.

"This award is voted for by people involved in the licensed trade."
