A series of public meetings will be held about the future of 20mph zones in Calderdale – and it may lead to them being introduced in all residential areas and outside all schools.

The council is looking at introducing 20mph as the default speed in residential areas across the borough.

And the authority wants feedback on several ideas before making a decision. They are:

Continue with the current scheme of introducing two or more schemes each year in specific areas of Calderdale,

Introduce 20mph speed limits outside all Calderdale schools

Introduce 20mph speed limits in all residential areas across Calderdale.

Clr Barry Collins, Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, said: “It’s really important that we take the views of local people into account when making a decision about the 20mph speed limits in Calderdale.

“Residents have expressed their concerns with speeding across Calderdale and introducing 20mph speed limits should help slow traffic down to reduce the number of casualties occurring on our roads.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage as many people as possible to let us know their views.”

The preferred option for the Labour-run council is to introduce 20mph speed limits in all residential areas.

A public meeting takes place at Brighouse Civic Hall on Wednesday, December 4 from 3pm-7pm.

There are also meetings on Wednesday, November 27 from 3pm-7pm at Hebden Bridge Town Hall; Thursday, November 28 from 3pm-7pm Halifax Central Library and Thursday, December 6 from 3.30pm to 7pm at Sacred Heart and St Patrick RC Church, Sowerby Bridge.
