DOGS from Kirklees are in the running for the RSPCA Dog of the Year title.

And the public can now vote for their favourite pooch.

The contest is for dogs that have been taken in by rescue centres.

Among the competitors is 18-month-old border collie Teija, who now lives in Huddersfield.

Teija, who was born blind and deaf, was picked up in Llanelli, Wales.

Her owner Lee Hughes said: “Her disability is just a label and although everyone thinks she must be hard work, she is no different to live with than any other dog.

“She doesn’t know she is different and to watch her play neither does anyone else. I feel privileged to share her life and I am so proud of her.”

Five-year-old lurcher cross Cassi, who lives in Mirfield, is also on the shortlist.

She was found emaciated, and with multiple injuries, after a suspected road accident. She was rescued by the Huddersfield RSPCA centre.

Owner David Pinder said: “Now Cassi is settled in she has put on weight and is a happy, well adjusted dog.”

Brighouse dog Billy, who is seven months old, is also in the running.

He was taken in by Halifax Animal Centre because his previous owner’s son was allergic to him.

New owners Maddy and Penny Coldwell said: “He is such a friendly, sociable little dog that we decided to adopt him permanently, and he is fantastic.”
