MIRFIELD residents want extra street lighting to increase security and safety.

The call for improved lighting follows a meeting between Kirklees Highways officials and councillors.

Each year, ward members have a small budget to allocate towards improving street lighting in their areas.

In Mirfield this year's grant from Kirklees Council was £10,000.

But this did not cover the number of projects the officials had identified as needed in the town.

Clr Martyn Bolt wants the extra money to come from the area committee budgets for this year.

The support from Mirfield Area Committee would be £18,750.

Clr Kath Taylor, who is in charge of community safety on the committee, and the committee itself agreed this would be a good use of cash.

The improved lighting would be in a number of places around the town.
