CHILDREN went back to the classroom during their long summer break.

But instead of theory and books, they learned from first hand experience at a series of inspirational workshops.

Sixty pupils aged between 11 and 13 from King James School, Almondbury and Spen Valley High School, Liversedge, took part in two week-long Design 2003 projects run by architect Abbas Shah at Huddersfield University.

Youngsters crafted chairs out of newspaper which are strong enough to sit on.

That was just one of a series of events encouraging them to think creatively.

Bilal Lukhele, who grew up under the apartheid regime in South Africa, spoke to children about his boyhood experiences.

"The idea behind the week is building structures, building the self and relationships," said Mr Shah.

The remarkable chairs are being exhibited at the Earth Centre near Doncaster.

"It's about bringing education to life," he said.

The event was organised through Kirklees School Effectiveness Service.
