SCHOOL children escaped unhurt when a school bus caught fire in Huddersfield.

The yellow bus, packed with youngsters from King James’ School, was travelling on St Mary’s Lane in Kirkheaton when the driver realised the engine had caught fire shortly after 4pm yesterday.

He stopped and ushered the youngsters further up the road to safety.

KIng James pupil Thomas Donkersley had just got off another bus to go to his Kirkheaton home and caught the drama on his mobile phone.

Two fire engines from Huddersfield doused the flames which were confined mainly to the engine.

Thomas, 14, said: “Everyone got off safely and no-one was hurt. The smoke was pouring out of the engine and all through the seating area.’’
