PEOPLE are being urged to help Kirklees Council reach recycling targets.

A drive will get under way to make sure Government targets are met.

It will include:

* A plea for people to think twice when they put something in their grey bin rather than the green bin

* Extending kerbside glass collections

* Recycling street sweepings.

At the moment Kirklees is recycling about 16% of household waste.

But council chiefs think that with just a little bit more effort they could hit the 21% target by this time next year.

Council deputy leader Clr John Smithson said he thanked everyone who made recycling efforts.

But he added: "Ambitious targets have been set for us to achieve.

"We are seeking to encourage more recycling by making it easier for people to recycle waste and by providing services to that end."

Clr Smithson said 15,000 tonnes of dry recyclable waste was still being put in ordinary waste bins.

Efforts would be made to raise awareness so it was put in green bins, he said.

A successful kerbside glass recycling pilot scheme in Denby Dale is to be extended after collecting 100 tonnes of glass since it started last autumn.

Clr Smithson said a small- scale trial to recycle street sweepings had been successfully completed and would be continued.

Sand and grit is processed from the waste, for use in making building products.

Clr Smithson said: "It is estimated that these three initiatives collectively could put us on course to meet the 21% target by this time next year.

"However, the support of the public is absolutely vital. It has been brilliant up to now and I am confident we can meet the target with continued commitment from our residents."
