QUADS born in Huddersfield are stepping up in the world this week - when they go to high school for the first time.

Decked out in smart new uniforms, the Cockerell children will be going to Royds Hall High School in Paddock.

Now aged 11, Emma Louise, Sammy Jo and Damien John, known as DJ, will be in different classes.

It will be the first time they have been split up since their school days started.

It's a far cry from the early days when they were on a ventilator because of their low weight.

Sadly, one baby, Frederick Thomas, died at birth.

Mum Yvonne Hirst admits it will be an emotional occasion on the first day at high school.

"I'm taking them on their first day for a bit of support," she said.

"I think they're a bit nervous but I'm sure they'll be all right."

Twice-divorced Miss Hirst, 43 next Saturday, became pregnant after fertility treatment and the quads were born in May, 1992.

The children first attended Rawthorpe Nursery School and then switched to Crow Lane Primary School in Milnsbridge when the family moved from Dalton to Cowlersley.

Their mum said: "They're all different looking and they've got different personalities and temperaments.

"They argue like any other kids, then make it up after they've fallen out."

DJ wants to be a vet and Sammy Jo a midwife, while Emma Louise hopes she will become a fashion designer.

Miss Hirst, meanwhile, is going on a course to become a teaching assistant.

She had to give up her previous job in worsted mending because of childcare problems.

"Being a teaching assistant will fit in perfectly with their school holidays," she said.

"I reckon that if you've got the patience to deal with three, then you can handle a whole classroom."
