PARENTS were today asking why schools had to shut because of snow.

More than 100 schools across Kirklees closed yesterday in the cold snap.

The unexpected day off for children left problems for many working parents.

Education chiefs said health and safety came first when heads made their decision.

Margaret Parker, Kirklees Council assistant education director, said: "The expectation is that schools will try not to close.

"But heads ultimately have to treat the health and safety and welfare of pupils and staff as a priority."

She explained that difficult decisions had to be made on a complex issue.

"Things like geography, the location and whether or not there is a safe environment have to be considered," she said.

Special schools faced particular problems, she added.

"Pupils in these schools are usually bussed in from a wide area," said Mrs Parker.

"You need to ask that you might get them there, but would you be able to get them home?"

The picture was completely different today, as temperatures rose and gritting crews completed work to get roads open.

Only Shelley College was closed in Huddersfield, while Rishworth school was shut in Ripponden.
