A CRACK team of volunteers are jumping into action to help raise money for Cancer Research.

Organisers of the Huddersfield Race for Life have put out a call for the SAS – Special Action Squad – to help make the Leeds Road event a smooth operation.

The unique team of local men and women are needed to organise the thousands of women who run, jog and walk the 5km route for charity.

Imogen Johnson, Huddersfield event manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s not just the 6,000 women who take part in the Huddersfield Race for Life who are important to us.

“Our Special Action Squad of volunteers play a crucial role – without them the event simply wouldn’t happen.

“Putting on a Race for Life event is a bit like a military operation which starts long before the first participants arrive and ends long after the last one crosses the finish line.

“There is a huge variety of important tasks that need to be done, including setting up the 5k course and main event area, marshalling the course, assisting in the information marquee and handing out water, goody bags and medals at the finish.”

To register as a volunteer or to enter the race on the weekend of June 27 and 28 go to the website www.raceforlife.org or phone 0871 641 2282.
