A YOUNG woman was presented with £100 after reaching the finals of the 2004 Childcare Student of the Year Award.

Rachael Hancox, 19, of Berry Brow, was nominated for the award by June Davidson, her tutor at Huddersfield Technical College.

Rachael, who has nine brothers and sisters, now works at the Kindercastle day nursery in Huddersfield town centre.

But she was previously on a nursery nursing course at the college.

Ms Davidson said: "I nominated her because of her excellent attitude.

"She was the top- grade student and got fantastic reports from her work placements.

"Her work was the best we had ever seen."

Rachael was one of only four entrants to make it through to the national final.

The 2004 Heinemann and Nursery World Childcare Student of the Year Award took place at the Early Years and Primary Teaching exhibition in London.

It was attended by key workers in the educational sector, as well as childcare tutors and students from all over the UK.
