A RACE night is being held in a village tonight to help horse charities.

Holme Valley Riding Club is staging the event at Meltham Cricket Club from 8pm.

The event was sparked by a horrifying find at an Amersham, Buckinghamshire, farm last month.

Animal welfare officials discovered 111 horses. More than 30 horses, ponies and donkeys were found dead and three more had to be put down.

The survivors were taken to nearby sanctuaries and are now receiving care.

The operation was helped by the International League for the Protection of Horses, Norfolk-based Redwings Horse Sanctuary, The Blue Cross and The Horse Trust.

Money raised tonight will go to Redwings, the International League for the Protection of Horses and the Horse Trust.

Holme Valley Riding Club is based at Meltham Sports and Community Centre on Mean Lane.
