A FLY-PAST by an RAF Vulcan bomber will be among the highlights – quite literally – of this year’s Honley Show.

Acknowledged as one of the best agricultural-based events in the north of England, show officials are again hoping to appeal to families.

This year’s show on Saturday will again take place at the new Farnley Tyas showground with free buses running to and from Honley village throughout the day.

The fly-past at 3pm will be a new attraction this year along with laser clay pigeon shooting and golf.

In the livestock section goats will be represented for the first time in three years and will include a milking demonstration. There is also an extended horse section and cattle show.

For technology fans a local radio ham will be broadcasting and receiving messages from around the world on a special “Honley Show Frequency” and the local Two Valleys Radio will be presenting from the site.

A spokesman for the show said: “We believe we have a tremendous package lined up for all our visitors to this year’s show.

“Even FIFA have agreed to play England’s opening match in the World Cup on the day with the kick-off scheduled for 7.30pm which will permit Dad to get home after Honley Show in good time to put their feet up and watch the game!

“Seriously, everyone on the show committee has worked incredibly hard to bring this show together and provide the public with an excellent day out whilst also showing our support for local charities.”

The show is supporting the National Child Birth Trust this year and has already donated £250 to Colne Valley Heritage Museum to assist with funding.

Honley Show runs all day and also includes numerous exhibits of machinery, animals, trade stands, entertainment and demonstrations that will continue throughout the day.

Visitors driving to the site will have new parking areas this year.

A huge new parking area off Brockholes Road has replaced the fields used previously and a colour-coded system of traffic management is being brought in.

Show official John Purvis said; “The new parking area is much bigger than we have had before and it has room for everyone.

“We have signs directing people from all the various sections to their own parking areas and I will have 40 marshalls on duty to ensure the traffic keeps flowing.

“The free buses running to and from Honley will be running from Moorbottom from 9am onwards and is our way of keeping green, as it will keep many cars off the road.

“We have also liaised with the police about closing roads on a temporary basis and this will done throughout the day to prevent hold-ups.”
