THIEVES blew up a store window and metal shutters with explosives in a failed bid to steal electrical goods.

Three raiders drove to the Birstall Retail Park in a Subaru Impreza at 10.45pm on Saturday night.

They began hacking at the window of electrical retailer Currys on the site, just off junction 27 of the M62.

After making a hole they put in a high-powered firework. It blew the window out and ripped a hole in the metal security shutter.

It also sent flaming debris into the store and on to the store forecourt.

Witnesses, who reported the attempted theft to the police, say they saw a blinding flash and then a huge plume of smoke coming from the store.

The trio fled empty- handed towards the M62 in their car.
