Three raiders wearing motorcycle helmets forced their way into the Co-op in Holmfirth in the early hours of this morning in a carbon-copy raid.

Police believe the burglary is linked to two other incidents, including one which was at the same premises in Market Street just seven days ago.

In the latest incident the men prised open the metal shutters before smashing the glass to the front display window to get inside.

They then made their way to the checkout area and smashed open the cigarette cabinet before making off with their haul of cigarettes and tobacco.

Police were alerted to the store after witnesses heard glass breaking and the stores alarm activated at around 1.45am.

It is believed a haul of cigarettes were stolen and further checks are being made with staff this morning to confirm whether anything else was taken.

The previous incidents happened on May 20, also at Holmfirth and May 12 at the Linthwaite Co-op.

Det Insp Ian Thornes of Huddersfield CID said: “We are seeking three suspects who we believe are travelling from outside the Huddersfield area and who fled in a black 4x4.

Detective Inspector Ian Thornes

“A number of people witnessed the incident and have already come forward but we would urge anyone who saw the vehicle or the suspects, who were wearing motorcycle helmets, to get in touch.

“We believe the suspects are travelling into Huddersfield to commit these offences but may have been in the area earlier in the week to check out the premises.

“If you noticed anything suspicious earlier in the week please pass on this information.

“This is the third time a burglary has occurred at the Co-op stores, twice in Holmfirth and once at a Co-op store in Manchester Road, Linthwaite. It is imperative that we trace these suspects.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
