Raiders forced their way into a Birchencliffe sandwich shop stealing a safe containing £2,000.

A gang of at least three men smashed the glass door at the Greggs store in Halifax Road just before 11.30pm last night.

Inside they grabbed a safe, containing weekend takings, and made off in a vehicle.

The shop, next to Tesco Express on the site of the former Grey Horse pub, only opened last month.

Det Insp George Bardell, of Kirklees CID, said enquiries were at an early stage and appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw a suspicious vehicle, possibly being driven erractically, to contact police.

Mr Bardell said there were at least three suspects and possibly a driver. The store has an internal CCTV system which was damaged by the raiders. The shop was shut early this morning for repairs.

When the shop opened in September it was the seventh Greggs store in Huddersfield. The others are in New Street, The Piazza, Kingsgate, Huddersfield Bus Station, Bradley and Aspley.

Anyone with information should contact Kirklees CID on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
