A GANG of masked men who raided a moorland pub attacked a guest staying there.
More details have now emerged about the terrifying raid at The Huntsman in Greenfield Road, Holmfirth.
The gang broke in during the early hours of yesterday and are thought to have been searching the pub for up to an hour before they were confronted by a night worker.
The inn has 15 bedrooms and residents disturbed by the noise went to investigate – and a 60-year-old man was beaten.
He was left bruised, but not badly hurt.
The gang eventually left the pub at around 4am with a safe which was found dumped unopened in a nearby field.
They had only stolen a small amount of cash from the pub and hotel which is a popular wedding venue.
Det Sgt Paul Simm from Kirklees CID said: “It was a shocking incident for the staff and residents. A small number of residents tried to intervene, but one was attacked. Once the robbers had left the pub they could have gone one of four ways – to Holmfirth, Holme, Meltham or Greater Manchester.
“We want anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the early hours of yesterday morning to contact us as a matter of urgency.’’
The gang wore balaclavas and are thought to be in their late teens or early 20s.
Det Sgt Simm added: “It’s a very unusual type of crime for this area.”
