PLANS to carry out repairs to the front of Huddersfield Railway Station will be discussed this week.

The grade one listed building needs work doing on some of the stonework either side of the entrance. The walls are fenced off to prevent any further erosion or damage.

Kirklees Council planning officer Stan Driver said the work, to be discussed by councillors on Friday, would be delicate and specialists would be called in.

"Some stonework needs replacing or repairing," he said. "We know how much people love this building and we want to restore it.

"Because of the complexity of it being a listed building we have to apply in stages.

"Any work would have to be very carefully considered and we would make sure only a contractor who was highly- specialised in this type of work would be hired."

Richard Huddleston, secretary of the Huddersfield Civic Society, welcomed the moves - as long as the job was done right.

"It is a massively important building and very rare so it must be cared for," he said.

"There are areas of it that need work and I am glad to see the council is willing to address those.

"Our only concern would be that it is done properly but I am confident that it will be."
