Weather fronts will sweep across Britain bringing a potent cocktail of strong winds, rain, sleet and snow in many areas before clear skies bring an overnight ice threat.

An occluded front – when a colder snap catches up with warmer conditions lifting the milder air from the surface – moved over the country during Monday night.

Rain is expected to be widespread on Tuesday morning with sleet and snow combining in western and northern areas.
