A RALLY to gather support for protecting public sector pensions has been organised by Huddersfield Trades Union Council.

The rally will take place on Friday at 12.30pm at the St Patrick's Centre on New North Road in Huddersfield, as part of the National TUC Day of Action.

There will be speakers from Huddersfield TUC, Kirklees Unison, the Fire Brigades' Union, the National Union of Teachers, and the Public and Commercial Services Union.

The day of action is to protest over Government proposals to change the pensions of public sector workers.

From April 1, the Government will raise the minimum age for retirement through redundancy from 50 to 55.

The Huddersfield TUC claims the changes will make it financially impossible for most people to retire before the age of 65.

They are also unhappy that from April 2008, the Government wants to increase public sector workers' pension contributions but plans to cut the workers' benefits.

Bob Stoker, secretary of Huddersfield TUC, said: "The MPs have voted themselves one of the most generous pension schemes in Europe.

"The fat cats of industry award themselves pensions that look like lottery numbers - the sort of pensions that public sector workers can only dream about."

Several unions representing public workers are planning strike action in March over the issue.
