PUPILS at Rastrick High School won the borough’s first ever spelling bee contest.

Teams from Rastrick High School, Brighouse High School and Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School competed in a number of rounds culminating in a quickfire round to decide the winners.

The first Calderdale Inter School Spelling Bee took place at the Rastrick school – and the school were named champions.

They scored 47 points and Katie Moylan, English teacher at Rastrick High School and also one of the organisers, said: “The evening was a resounding success.

“Each and every one of the team members has given up their time to ensure that they were the very best they could be and they should be very proud of themselves.

“The experience was fun and exciting for the students while also having a positive impact on literacy – what could be better than that?

“I am thrilled that this will become an annual event and am already looking forward to next year’s competition”.
