A HOSPICE has received a £10,000 boost after a wife held a fundraiser in her husband’s memory.
Rachel Bray’s husband Jez died last August aged 52 after battling stomach cancer.
Rachel, of Rastrick, set about organising a charity ball in memory of him at the Casa hotel and restaurant in Brighouse.
She hoped to raise Overgate Hospice’s running costs for a day, which is £6,000. But she topped £10,000 and has donated £10,189 to the Elland-based hospice, which provides care for people with life-limiting conditions.
Jez received care at Overgate for two years before his death.
Rachel decided to call the charity event the Pay for a Day Ball.
But it exceeded everyone’s expectations, something Rachel said was a mark of her husband.
“I cannot believe how much we raised, I had to count it twice just to check.
“I think the success was down to Overgate being an amazing place, just brilliant, and also the sort of person Jez was.”
They had six children – Emma, Charlotte, James, Reece, Jeremy and Jordan.
Rachel is now planning a similar event next year.
