SCRAP metal thieves are causing big problems in Rastrick.
They are stealing roadside grate covers – leaving holes which could lead to accidents.
Calderdale Council has already had to replace six grate covers.
Police believe that the thieves are taking the grate covers for their scrap value, and officers are now working with local scrap merchants in a bid to track down the culprits.
There have been thefts reported in Healey Wood Road and Lyndhurst Road.
The theft of grates was a big problem in several parts of Huddersfield last year.
Kirklees Council and police had to deal with more than 30 thefts from areas including Slaithwaite, Scammonden and Bradley.
Police confirmed that over the past few years metal grate thefts have been reported in and around Huddersfield, following a surge in scrap metal prices.
In one spate of thefts up to 20 gully grates were stolen in the area around Woodman Avenue at Bradley.
A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: “We would urge anyone who has any knowledge of the Rastrick thefts to contact us at once”.
Witnesses should telephone either 01484 405251 or 0845 6060606.
