CALLS for traffic calming at the scene of a serious smash are unfounded, according to a councillor.

Residents living on and near Kirkwood Drive contacted the Examiner after a 17-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries in a crash on April 8.

They said the road had become a rat-run because of traffic avoiding speed bumps on nearby Cowrakes Road and Moorhill Road.

There were concerns the incident could be repeated unless action was taken.

But Conservative Lindley councillor Tony Brice has obtained figures showing that, before April 8, there were no incidents reported to police on Kirkwood Drive in the last 20 years.

He said: “There may have been minor bumps, but nothing too serious.

“I still believe that Kirkwood Drive isn’t a road that you can speed down and I’m not convinced it’s a rat-run.

“If there were a lot of problems we would have taken some action, but at the moment I don’t feel there’s any need to do anything because there isn’t a significant problem.

“Residents haven’t complained to me or highways.

“We do listen, and if there is a problem, we will address it.”
