A £10m programme to build four new old people's homes in Kirklees is set to start in the next few weeks.

Some 160 en suite rooms will be provided in the council-run homes.

Work will go ahead at three existing homes - Moorlands Grange at Netherton, Ings Grove at Mirfield and Claremont House, Heckmondwike.

In addition, a home will be built on the site of the former Castle Grange home at Newsome.

This will specialise in care for older people with mental health needs.

Each of the homes will have 40 modern rooms with private toilet and shower/bath en suite facilities.

They are the first-ever en suite facilities in Kirklees Council residential homes.

Clr Dennis Hullock, Cabinet member for health and social services, said: "High-quality residential care is an essential part of the overall programme to modernise and improve services across the board for older people.

"Kirklees is one of only a few councils throughout the country building new homes."

Claremont and Moorlands Grange will be the first of the new homes to be completed, with handover planned for February, 2006.

Ings Grove should be completed by May, 2006.

Work on the new building at the former Castle Grange home is planned to start next February, with the new home being ready in March, 2006.

Claremont House at Heckmondwike will join the new Newsome home in providing specialist residential care for people with mental health problems.

Ings Grove House will specialise in providing short-term breaks.

Moorlands Grange will focus on residential care for people recovering after hospital stays.

It will provide specialist assessment facilities, as well as retaining beds for long-stay residential care.

Two other homes - Oakes Villa at Lindley and Knowl Park House in Mirfield - will be developed as resource centres to provide day care services for older people.

Clr Hullock said: "An important emphasis is to provide support and care services to enable older people to live in their own homes or independently as long as poss- ible."
