It looked like a scene straight out of Supermarket Sweep.

But these madcap groups had a very different aim in mind when they rolled through the streets of Shelley and Shepley in the first-ever trolley dash.

Crowds of residents looked on in amusement as around 50 1980s-themed Scousers, cross dressers and wild animals zoomed through the area on an eight-mile race to raise the profile of local pubs and prove that community spirit was alive and well.

Even an army of eccentric doctors and nurses were seen doing the rounds as one of the eight teams, after converting their trolley into a boy-racer style ambulance.

They got rolling at the Flying Ferret on Huddersfield Road before visiting eight pubs on their route, including The Rising Sun, Black Bull and the Star Inn in Upper Cumberworth, whilst raising around £1,500 for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in the process.

One of those who donned a curly black wig and a Liverpool FC shirt to take part was Victoria Campbell, a Shelley resident from Beaufort Park.

She said: “It was a brilliant day and we definitely had our work cut out.

“We got a lot of laughs from people and many stopped in their cars to give us change.

“I can’t wait to take part again next year, although I was very glad of the rest afterwards.”

The unusual event was organised by forward-thinking landlord of the Flying Ferret, Chris Barrow, who is now looking for a sponsor to make it even bigger and better next year.

He said: “I wanted to bring more attention to the villages and after someone told me that it would be hard to reinvigorate a sense of community spirit through putting on an event I saw it as a great challenge.

“It was a fabulous day and the reaction we got from the public was priceless.

“We’re already planning for next year’s event and are on the look out for any company who would like to sponsor the event in return for having it named after them.”

The trolley dash has certainly put Kirkburton on the map and joins a list of the county’s weirdest and most wonderful public events, which includes the famed Knaresborough bed race and North Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Pudding boat challenge.
