FILM superstar Patrick Stewart is to star in another TV blockbuster - extolling the virtues of Huddersfield.

He has been shooting for a second TV commercial on behalf of the University of Huddersfield, where he is chancellor.

And Stewart - a man used to the top Hollywood studios - admitted that new drama facilities at the Milton Hall in Huddersfield were among the finest he had seen anywhere in the world.

The new advertisement will appear on Yorkshire Television for the first two weeks in December and on Channel 4 North for the second week in December.

The first TV commercial is believed to have helped a surge in student applications for Huddersfield.

Set in a realistic drama workshop involving some 24 Huddersfield students, the new advert aims to convey the message that University tuition fees will be payable after graduation in future, not in advance, as in the current system.

Using a single tracking shot, the 30-second film features Stewart explaining the key feature of the new fees structure as well as the reassuring message that financial help may be available to help with living costs, both from the Government and the university.

Philip Williams, head of public relations, said: "We were delighted when Patrick Stewart agreed to appear in one advert for us. Now that he is appearing in a second we are absolutely thrilled.

"He came up with the script idea himself and we secured the services of a top London director to shoot the commercial on location here in Huddersfield.

"Patrick alludes to the impressive facilities here on campus in the advert and the drama studios look stunning as a backdrop.

"An added bonus was the involvement of the students. A single shot of this kind takes some staging, even for an actor as experienced as Patrick.

"The advert was completed after 19 `takes' and it was just terrific watching Patrick in action. He is such an accomplished performer and his delivery struck the right note of reassurance that we were looking for."

The star has again appeared free of charge in the advert which cost about £30,000 to produce.

Airtime costs are about £40,000 on Yorkshire Television and £12,500 on Channel 4 North. Funding was released from the University's strategic provision budget.

"The advert aims to correct misunderstandings about the tuition fee structure to be introduced in September 2006," said Mr Williams.

"The Government has already screened TV adverts aimed at young people and parents.

"Ours is intended to augment and strengthen the message that the new fee structure with increased fees need not be a barrier, in fact for many people it will provide a better deal than the current system."
