They were mellow in yellow at a Huddersfield school.

And the sunny outlook at Linthwaite Ardron CE J&I School was all for a good cause.

Teachers, staff and children wore bright yellow yesterday to help Ruddi’s Retreat – a charity dear to their hearts.

For four-year-old Ruddi Waterworth-Jones is now a pupil at the school.

Sadly he missed yesterday’s “mellow yellow” day as he was back in hospital for treatment on the rare form of cancer on his bladder and prostate.

But he and his mum, Ali Jones, both promised to wear something yellow on their trip to hospital.

Ali set up Ruddi’s Retreat to help other families.

The charity has just taken on a former shop unit in Linthwaite which is to be transformed into a coffee shop and will also become the charity’s new headquarters.

The charity has bought two large caravans at Primrose Valley near Filey on Yorkshire’s east coast, offering sick children and their families some respite care.

They also hope to buy a wooden lodge which will probably be sited near Blackpool.

Yesterday’s efforts at Ruddi’s school raised £200.

Headteacher Mrs Eelin Megson – who wore a bright yellow Barcelona shirt – said: “Ruddi has joined us full-time this year, having been in for a few days a week last term, and is loving life in year one.

“He is in Adam Taylor’s class and loves school, even though he gets a bit tired some afternoons.

“He plays a full part in school life and is very popular with all the children.

“He is very brave in the way he copes with his condition and he’s great to have in school full-time.

“We came up with the idea of the day on the theme ‘Don’t be mellow, be yellow’ and even though we knew Ruddi would not be here because of his hospital appointment, we decided to go ahead with it.

“Everyone has entered into the spirit of the day. We do have a yellow T-shirt as part of our school uniform, but most of the children have opted to come in without uniform and there are some really colourful characters.

“The staff have joined in and we have had a great day”.
