CHAMPION steel drummers have been given a civic reception at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The 15-strong group from the El Dorado Secondary Comprehensive School in Trinidad are visiting the town as part of a twinning link with Huddersfield's steel pan prizewinners, the North Stars Steel Orchestra.

The visit has been timed to coincide with the orchestra's bid to retain its national title at London's Notting Hill Carnival at the end of the month.

Fasal Mohammed, co-ordinator of music and steel band manager at the school in Tunapuna, said: "We have received a very, very warm welcome in Huddersfield. I have met people in the town who I last saw in Trinidad 30 years ago."

Mr Mohammed praised North Stars manager Kelvin Benjamin and his team for his vision in creating the twinning link and for promoting Huddersfield's musical reputation worldwide.

"North Stars is a marvellous ambassador for Huddersfield. It is a well-organised, talented group and we wish them well at the carnival," he said.

The twinning link will continue next February, when Huddersfield's musicians take on the finest in Trinidad and Tobago at the National Panorama competition in Port of Spain.
