THE Mayor of Kirklees is teaming up with two charities to turn rubbish into cash.

The mayor's two charities, the Laura Crane Trust and Kirkwood Hospice in Dalton, will receive money given back to the council if recycling targets are met.

Kirklees Council has agreed to donate any saving from decreasing the amount of money spent on Landfill Tax to boost the charities.

The mayor, Clr Margaret Fearnley, said the scheme was a winner.

She said: "This is a great project because it helps not just the environment but two excellent local charities.

"Encouraging people to think about the future of our environment is very important. If we can get them using their green bins more, with the knock-on effect of helping charities, that is wonderful."

Laura Crane's mother Jacquie Roeder, who set up the trust after her daughter died of cancer, said: "This is a great idea and very important to a charity like ours."
