FIREFIGHTERS will be hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for charity by appealing to both mums and kids.

Crews from Huddersfield will be outside the Sainsbury's store at Shore Head from 10am on Friday selling kiddies fire helmets and the 2007 firefighters Red Hot Dates calendars.

Huddersfield firefighter Des Facey - who stars in the calendar - will be there from 11am for a while if fans want to meet him.

Des, 32, of Birkby, has been with the service for four years and is a member of White Watch at Huddersfield fire station.

The calendar costs £5 and also features Skelmanthorpe firefighters Richard Meakin, Nick Alderson and Jason Crossland. Proceeds are destined for the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund - a charity tragically brought into focus this week with the deaths of two firefighters killed tackling a blaze at a fireworks depot near Lewes in East Sussex on Sunday afternoon.

The two who died - 63-year-old support officer Brian Wembridge and 49-year-old retained firefighter Geoff Wicker - had both worked tirelessly for many years for the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund.

Huddersfield fire station watch manager Andy Farrell, who has organised the fund-raising day at Shore Head, said: "We will be there from 10am with one engine and stay until, hopefully, we have sold out of helmets.

"They have always proved very popular with the children and we hope the calendars will be popular with the mums too!"

The crew will also be promoting fire safety.

Anyone wanting a free home safety fire check should phone 0800 587 4536 for free.
