Visitors to two historic houses in Kirklees will get the chance to see how Christmas was celebrated 200 years ago.

Red House Museum in Gomersal and Oakwell Hall in Birstall will be staging Christmas past events.

Today, will see Red House host a “Deck the Halls” event from 4pm to 8pm when there will be a costumed tour of the house followed by mulled wine and mince pies. The house will be decorated for a traditional 19th century Christmas with seasonal music. Entrance is £10 per person and pre-booking is required.

This Saturday and Sunday,

will see a Red House Christmas when visitors will meet Joshua Taylor, the head of the household, see the cook at work preparing traditional dishes in the kitchen, enjoy a drink of mulled wine and make a traditional Christmas decoration with the Friends of Red House.

Music will be provided by the Valley Flutes on Saturday and the Nonsuch Dulcimers on Sunday.

Normal house admission charges apply.

Next Tuesday will see a Deck the Halls event at Oakwell Hall from 4pm to 8pm with a costumed tour of the house, mulled wine and mince pies.

The hall will be decorated for a traditional 17th century Christmas with seasonal music from the Leeds Waits. The cost is £10 and pre-booking is required.
