REGIONAL government is a big turn-off, Tories have discovered.

A survey by the party showed that 54% of people were opposed to local parliaments.

Now, critics say that the more that people hear about devolution, the more sceptical they become.

This year, Yorkshire voters go to the polls to decide whether they want the county to have its own parliament.

Kirklees Tory group leader Robert Light said of the survey results: "The findings simply confirm what we already knew.

"Regional assemblies are a gimmick."

He added: "There is no interest in Kirklees for creating this assembly and there is no interest elsewhere in the region."

Clr Light slammed the idea of the vote that will take place this year.

He said: "The autumn referendum on regional assemblies - which will cost local taxpayers a fortune to stage - will prove conclusively that local people are not interested."

Supporters of such devolved government - akin to the Welsh Assembly - say it would boost the economy and advance the arts, sport and tourism, as well as having a positive impact on education, transport and health.
